new giants from the west coast....

sometimes it's pretty hard to categorize bands that you've heard only one or two times. sometimes it's impossible even after you played them a hundred times. in case of "avi buffalo" i tend to the second possibility. this four-piece from long beach / california, signed to subpop, combines many influences from various styles and put it in a blanket made of wonderful soundscapes. sometimes they remind me of galaxie 500, then again i hear the shins in their songs. their album is like some amazing trip across the west coast from san diego up to seattle. on this trip you're passing by places that remind you of the bands that could have influenced avi buffalo, or that would work pretty well on a compilation with avi buffalo. avi buffalo's debut is yet again another grand entrance by a band releasing through subpop. my most favourite song on the album is without a doubt "what's in it for?". it's one of the most outstanding tunes i've heard this year, even though it was originally released as a single in 2009.
