smith westerns - dye it blonde

smith westerns consists of cullen omori (vocals), max kakacek (guitar), and cameron omori (bass). all members range in age from 19 to 20. since forming in 2007, smith westerns have managed to tour both the united states and europe while supporting the likes of mgmt, florence and the machine, belle and sebastian, girls and passion pit. their self recorded “lo-fi” debut "smith westerns released in 2009, garnered critical acclaim for their youthful and glam rock tinged approach to pop music.
their new album "dye it blonde" is less lo-fi, but a proper produced mix of their often named influences, such as glam-rock-pop by the likes of t-rex and david bowie and a bunch of new additional influences. culloen omori told pitchfork that the album was influenced by 90s britpop acts like suede and teenage fanclub. the mix of those influences and their fantastic songwriting skills makes dye it blonde a great sophomore album. it has very high potential to make smith westerns one of the first hyped acts in 2011. my personal highlights on the album are "smile", "imagine pt. 3" and "still new".
9.5/10 (fk 05.01.11)
